The impact this platform has had on both my personal and professional growth has been nothing short of extraordinary.
The Beginning: Nashville and New Discoveries
My Tableau story began in 2018 when I was first introduced to this powerful visualization platform. Like many great journeys, mine started with community. I became actively involved in the local Nashville Tableau Community, attending every meetup I could find. The energy and passion of fellow data enthusiasts was infectious, and I knew I had found something special.
I owe tremendous gratitude to several people who shaped my early Tableau experience. Jim Dehner deserves a big shoutout for always being incredibly welcoming and patient, even when I was asking those newbie questions that probably made him smile.
But the story really begins with Charlie Bryan and Daryle Dowell. Without these two individuals, I might never have discovered Tableau at all. Charlie was the visionary who introduced the platform to our organization, while Daryle gave me something equally valuable: permission to fail forward and the space to figure out how to really work this tool.
The Superdome Experience That Opened My Eyes
My perspective on Tableau completely shifted when I attended the Tableau Conference in 2018 in New Orleans. Walking into that event, I had no idea about the global scale of the Tableau community. The conference was absolutely mind blowing! When Tableau rented out the entire Superdome, I stood there in awe, realizing I was part of something much bigger than I had ever imagined. The energy, the innovation, the sheer number of people who shared this passion for data visualization was truly insane!!
Finding My Voice in the Community
One of my early goals was to become more active in public speaking, and the Nashville Tableau User Group provided the perfect platform for my first real presentation.
If you’ve been following my journey, you know I’m always seeking mentorship opportunities. That’s how I connected with my sister Chantilly, who became not just a mentor but my family. I had no idea that this friendship would transform my professional trajectory so dramatically. During COVID, when the world shifted to virtual everything, Chantilly began involving me in speaking opportunities. This exposure started generating recognition within the broader Tableau community, opening doors I never knew existed.
Recognition and Growth
In 2020, I was honored to be chosen as a Tableau featured author, an experience captured in this YouTube video. This recognition felt surreal, here I was, someone who had started as a complete beginner just two years earlier, now being featured by Tableau itself. I’m still friends with several people from this cohort to this day!

Tableau Ambassador: A Role I Treasure
Since 2022, I’ve had the incredible honor of serving as a Tableau Ambassador, a recognition I absolutely do not take lightly. Being selected as an ambassador represents more than just personal achievement, it’s a responsibility to the community that has given me so much.
The ambassador role has become one of the most meaningful aspects of my Tableau journey. It’s allowed me to be an official voice for the community, helping to bridge connections between Tableau users worldwide and providing feedback that shapes the platform’s future. Whether I’m mentoring newcomers, advocating for community needs, or sharing insights with the Tableau team, every aspect of this role energizes me.
What I love most about being a Tableau Ambassador is the opportunity to give back. The community supported me when I was starting out, and now I get to pay that forward by helping others navigate their own data visualization journeys. It’s a role that perfectly combines my passion for Tableau with my commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive community.
The Lovelytics Chapter
One of the most formative periods of my Tableau journey was my time at Lovelytics, working alongside Chantilly. Being part of a team that was recognized as Tableau Partner of the Year was an incredible experience. Surrounded by brilliant minds who constantly challenged me to grow sharper, I gained invaluable insights into Tableau from both product and sales perspectives.
My time at Lovelytics created memories I’ll treasure forever. The foundational knowledge I gained about Tableau during this period directly shaped my trajectory toward where I am today with Royal Blue Analytics. The lessons learned there continue to influence how I approach data visualization and client relationships.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to attend several Tableau conferences, each one offering new perspectives and connections. One particularly memorable experience was actually sitting on the conference floor during a keynote.
But perhaps my most treasured highlight came in 2024 when I traveled to London to speak at DataFam Europe, accompanied by my wife Kim and my sister Chantilly. Standing on that stage, presenting to an international audience, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible journey that brought me there. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that data would take me around the world, let alone that I’d be sharing my knowledge with fellow enthusiasts across continents.

The journey continued in 2025 when I was fortunate enough to present again, this time having my session featured on the Salesforce+ channel “Ten-Minute Tableau: Rapid Insights from DataFam’s Best.”
It’s amazing how one decision can lead to unexpected opportunities. I started a podcast simply because I wanted to connect with more people in the Tableau community, and I had no clue that this passion project would eventually get me on stage and onto official Salesforce platforms.
The Lasting Impact
Tableau has consistently opened doors I never knew existed. The platform hasn’t just been a tool for creating visualizations; it’s been a gateway to a global community, professional opportunities, and personal growth that continues to amaze me.
The relationships I’ve built through Tableau extend far beyond professional networking. These are genuine friendships with people who share a passion for turning data into meaningful insights. The mentorship I’ve received and now try to provide to others creates a beautiful cycle of growth and giving back.
Looking Forward
While Power BI may be my first love, nothing will ever pull me away from Tableau, regardless of how the data landscape evolves. Both Power BI and Tableau hold the top two positions in the market for good reason, and I’m excited to continue working with both tools for as long as possible.
The data visualization world is constantly evolving, with new tools and techniques emerging regularly. But what Tableau has taught me goes beyond any specific software; it’s about the power of community, the importance of continuous learning, and the incredible things that happen when passionate people come together around a shared purpose.
