My wife and I are expecting our first daughter (#CovidBaby) and she will be here SOON! We are really excited and can’t wait to meet our princess in a couple of months.
This year I decided to focus on creating data visualizations and dashboards about topics that I care about, so I decided to create one about our new addition! We (Kim) created 3 different baby registries so that sparked the idea. I wanted to see if I could consolidate all of our registries into one dataset, then create a dashboard using Tableau and Power BI (I got you next time Google Data Studio 😀 )
Data Scraping Tools Used:
- Python
- Data Miner
- Power Query
My friend Tim (@TmthyDobbins) created the Python script for me for Target and Amazon (You’re a lifesaver on this one!), and I used an online tool called “Data Miner” to get Buy Buy Baby’s information. I used Power Query to combined all of the data sets together and do some clean up.
Data Visualization Tools:
- Figma
- Tableau
- Power BI
I wanted to create the same design style for both dashboards so I used the tips and tricks I learned from Viz Design Secrets: Modern Sales Dashboard that was led by Chantilly Jaggernauth. Below you will see a dashboard using Tableau and one using Power BI.
If you want to just go to our baby registry and skip the dashboard then the links are below!

Power BI
Fun | Not So Fun |
Conditional Formatting Table – Very easy to edit | Interaction with the Top 5 graph. I could have used the RANKX function but I wanted to keep it simple |
Chicklet Slicers – Very easy to add | No ability to add text inside horizontal bar chart. This one REALLY drove me crazy. |
URL Images in Table – It’s nice being able to see the image in the table | No ability to add conditional formatting based on the dimension. |
Tableau
Fun | Not So Fun |
Horizontal Text in the bar chart | Conditional formatting tables is time consuming! It takes several steps to add context to a table |
URL Actions – Easy to link each individual registry to their logo | Unable to add URL images in the table. It would be nice to see images within the table. |
Context filters makes it easy to edit the Top 5 graph | Setting up the dashboard actions for the filters was a bit time consuming, but not horrendous. |
Interactive Dashboards – Use computer for best results
